About us

Mission

Celebrating and connecting Houston through powerful, innovative music that uplifts and educates.

Vision

Embracing Houston, singing music that inspires and connects us all.

Since 1986, Houston Masterworks Chorus has brought the world’s great choral classics to Houston while championing innovative programming that reflects the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. As we celebrate our 40th Anniversary Season, we are honored to welcome Dr. Justin Langham as our new Artistic Director. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter in our history as we continue to expand our artistic reach and community impact.

Houston Masterworks Chorus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to artistic excellence, accessibility, and meaningful collaboration. Our programming spans the Renaissance through contemporary eras, intentionally weaving together music, dance, and visual art to create performances that resonate with Houston’s diverse communities. In recent seasons, we have formed more than twenty unique partnerships annually and engaged over 140 local musicians, strengthening both artistic quality and the regional creative economy.

A highlight of our 40th Anniversary Season will be the world premiere of The Bridge, a commissioned work by Dr. Justin Langham with text by Houston poet Devondra Banks. This anniversary commission reflects our commitment to elevating local voices and creating new repertoire that speaks directly to our community.

Our other commissioned works further reflects this commitment. In 2024, we premiered Canción del Amor Lejano in collaboration with University of Houston Mariachi Director Jose Chabelo Longoria and the University of Houston Mariachi Pumas, a groundbreaking composition for mariachi band and chorus that affirms our dedication to diversity and belonging.

We have continued this work through encore performances and new partnerships, including collaborations with El Sistema Texas Symphony Youth Orchestra, Mexico en Danzas Grupo Folklorico and the Casulana Women’s Choir of Houston, among many others.

HMC is an all-volunteer, auditioned ensemble drawing singers from across the Greater Houston area. Our flexible rehearsal structure supports lifelong participation in choral music, and we actively remove barriers to entry by offering scholarships, vocal workshops, and community service opportunities for singers, along with free and discounted tickets for students, seniors, veterans, and music educators.

Each October, the HMC Young Singer Competition highlights exceptional high school vocalists pursuing professional careers. Finalists receive cash awards, and the winner is invited to perform  as a featured soloist at our annual holiday concert.

Globally inspired and locally focused, Houston Masterworks Chorus has performed at Carnegie Hall, throughout Italy, at St. Peter’s Basilica, and in Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor 80th anniversary commemoration. Closer to home, we incorporate Houston’s mural art into our seasonal branding and sponsor public mural tours that celebrate the city’s renowned street artists.

As we mark our 40th season under the leadership of Dr. Justin Langham, we invite you to join us in celebrating four decades of powerful music that uplifts, connects, and educates. Whether as a supporter, audience member, or potential singer, we hope you will be part of our growing  Houston Masterworks Chorus community!
