HMC FAQ’s

How many songs does the chorus learn for each concert?

  • This depends on the length of each song and the concert’s theme, but all concerts consist of roughly 60–70 minutes of music.

What is the expectation for at-home learning of the pieces?

  • As with any musical ensemble, there is a certain expectation of preparedness when arriving at rehearsal.
  • Since HMC is a community-driven chorus, we understand that our members give generously of their time, talent, and efforts on top of their daily schedules.
  • The more prepared each individual is, the more the group will improve each week. A minimum of at least 1–2 hours of practice per week is a reasonable expectation.

What is the estimated cost of sheet music for a year in the chorus?

  • As with the number of pieces per concert, the cost will also vary for each program. Most standard choral pieces are around $2.30 each, and larger works (like Mozart’s Requiem we will be doing in November) can be $15–20 per copy.
  • However, some concerts will have pieces in the public domain (free) or we are able to obtain copies for the chorus (like the Mozart). All in all, I would estimate that the cost would be around $100 per singer per season. HMC also has a scholarship program to help defray the costs of Membership $100/year and or music.

What is the wardrobe cost?

  • As of the 2025–2026 season, we are requiring an all-black base outfit that adheres to our wardrobe guidelines, along with particular accents that correspond with each program, with very little extra cost for chorus members.

Can You Describe the Attendance Policy?

  • Attendance is taken each week by our section leaders, and we ask that any conflicts are communicated in writing at least two weeks in advance through Choir Genuis.
  • To ensure fairness and a high-quality of performance, anyone with two or more absences per concert cycle must meet for a short Individual Singing Test (IST) with the Artistic Director or a section leader.

What are rehearsals like?

  • We strive to maintain a fun and positive atmosphere during all rehearsals that helps each singer learn and perform to the best of their abilities.
  • The first Monday of each month is an open rehearsal & snack day where anyone is free to observe rehearsals or sing with us!
  • (Making comments and talking to your neighbors during rehearsals is not allowed as this distracts fellow choristers.
  • Any questions should be written down and shared with your section leader before rehearsal, during break, or after rehearsal.
  • Please make sure your cell phones or other devices are put on silent or put away during rehearsal.)

Are there extra rehearsals as a concert approaches?

  • Yes, there is one “tech” rehearsal prior to each concert that varies on day depending on instruments or other guests involved.
  • A full schedule is available at the start of each season, which will have all relevant dates.

How do I volunteer?

  • (Our mission is to celebrate and connect Houston through powerful, innovative music that uplifts and educates, and we can’t do it alone! We need your talents and skills at HMC, and your friends’ and family’s, too! Your roles in our choral community go beyond just singing or watching, so let us know how you would like to help out.)
  • Throughout the year, we ask for help with front of house, promoting and representing HMC, staffing events and fundraisers, serving on committees, selling tickets, ushering, and helping with stage set up and tear down. All singers are expected to pitch in!
